Our History
Over a decade of impact...
Founded in 2012 by Dr. G. Ayorkor Korsah and Prof. Ken Goldberg, AfROB (formerly known as AFRON) was established as a collaborative platform to advance robotics education, research, and industry across Africa.
AfROB’s first major initiative was the $10 Robot Design Challenge, launched the same year. This global competition aimed to inspire the development of low-cost, programmable robots—targeting a $10 price point—to make robotics more accessible to students in resource-constrained environments.
Since then, AfROB has evolved into a vibrant and diverse community of over 400 members from 56 countries across Africa and the world. The network continues to organize collaborative projects, events, and meetings—both within Africa and at international robotics forums—to foster knowledge sharing and strengthen connections across the global robotics community.
